ALLA DIRITTA

The name for this arrow comes from an Italian musical term "alla diritta," which means "in direct motion." Granted, the arrows themselves do not move, but they indicate the direction in which they want your eyes to move.

The arrow is made from a set of ebony key extensions from an old piano. I left the capstan screws in place and touched up the black paint that was already present at the ends where the ebony had been removed, to give it a cleaner appearance. The barbs on the arrows are smaller portions of the same key extensions, left over from another project. I try not to let any part of the piano go to waste.

On the back you will find a piece of lauan, which serves to reinforce the joining of the key extensions; and on that board is a message about how my piano art came to be, as well as my contact information and hand signature.

A sawtooth hanger enables the arrow to be hung on the wall. I oriented some of the arrows to point to the left, and some to point to the right. But in case you want the arrow facing some other direction, I've included an extra sawtooth hanger for you to install to suit your preference. For instructions on how to install the hanger, see the bottom of this description.

I have three of these available at the time of this listing, and all are pictured.

NOTE ABOUT UPCYCLING: Because I use discarded pianos, many of which are 50-100 years old, each piece by nature will have some minor defects and show some signs of "wear and tear." They may also appear somewhat dirty, despite my knuckle-scraping efforts to get them clean. (Solid wood pieces get a sink bath, but felt pieces can only be scrubbed with a dry wire or nylon brush.) Not only that, but each piece varies slightly from the next, making your purchase a one-of-a-kind. Any parts that are not indigenous to the piano are purchased new; only the piano parts are upcycled.

INSTALLING THE EXTRA SAWTOOTH HANGER: This is completely optional, and necessary only if you want to hang it in a different orientation than the way it was shipped to you. No nails are required. Simply place the sawtooth hanger where you want it on the back, hold it steady with a fingertip on one end, and tap the other end with a light hammer until it's secure. After that, go back and forth from one side to the other, tapping until the hanger is secure. Hammering in the middle tends to crush the sawtooth hanger, making it difficult to use.
