Mithras was a savior god who presided over the Mithraic Mysteries. This ancient Mystery Religion was very popular with the Roman Legions and Roman Soldiers, and temples to Mithras were spread throughout the ancient Roman world.
This scene shows Mithras and Sol, the God of the Sun, feasting together after the slaying of the Bull. After the Tauroctony Sol has descended from the deals heavens, knelt before Mithras, and the two have shaken hands as friends and equals. Now they partake in the abundance brought forth by the Tauroctony.
Mithras and Sol are reclining to eat in the Roman fashion, with Sol on the left toasting with a cup made from the bull's horn. Mithras, to the right, wearing his cape and Phrygian cap. Before them is a table made from the bull, set with set with food. After this Feast, Sol will take Mithras back to the heavens on his Solar chariot.
This feasting scene is a major part of Mithraic iconography. It is the triumph of the story. Mithras was sent from the heavens to the Earth and born from rock, a symbol of spirit entering the world. He goes through a series of events and trials, culminating in the triumph of Spirit symbolized by the slaying of the Bull. Now Sol and Mithras share in that abundance as equals, and with the trials over Mithras returns to the Heavens.
