ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Alec Thomson started his artistic prestige in 2012 at 16 years old upon winning first prize for the Human Rights Commission Art Award and being featured at some of Canberras most prominent local galleries.
Female at birth and previously known as Codi Thomson (until early 2021), this painting (“Skye”) is the very first of Alec's completed works to be signed with his new legally changed name upon transitioning to his true gender identity. This piece is therefore incredibly special and marks the beginning of a new age of Alec's creative journey and artistic career.
After leaving Canberra in 2013 to live in Scotland, Alec proceeded to spend the next few years backpacking around the world, using charcoal portraiture as a method to maintain income. A following was soon gained and Alec found himself visiting countries and cities he had never heard of just to personally complete charcoal and graphite portrait commissions for previously unknown individuals all over Europe, Canada and South East Asia.
Alec returned home to Australia after getting particularly sick while travelling, and upon return to normal, spent the next part of his artistic journey attending the Canberra Institute of Technology and completed a diploma in Fine Art in late 2015.
Alec's creative works, predominantly including oil paintings and charcoal drawings - however also acrylic and watercolour paintings and even sculpture - are currently on display in various locations throughout his home city: from public libraries, The University of Canberra, Lake Tuggeranong College and some government buildings; and of course also within independent buyers' homes all over the world. There are currently also several murals completed by Alec during his (previously her) travels in Hostels and tattoo parlours in Greece, Ireland and Thailand.
Alec's professional artistic career has developed over the years to now in 2022 at last has blossomed into an official part time occupation, with Alec completing commissions at deals every moment opportunity presents. He intends on pursuing portraiture as a medium and is currently preparing his application for the next Archibald Prize - the current project being undertaken is that of a portrait of great personal significance; the subject of which is a prominent member of the Australian parliament making meaningful progress for the LGBTQI+ public.
At 27 years old, Alec has already made his mark around Canberra and the world, and has no intention of slowing down.

ORIGINAL PAINTING - “SKYE” - INFORMAL ARTIST STATEMENT:
“Skye” was an absolute journey to paint, beneath this portrait are at least two other faces that didn't quite make the cut. She took approximately 4-5 months to complete because it needed to be just so, when she finally appeared I knew I had found the face to the feeling, and at last was able to look her in the eyes.
“Skye” herself is not based on a real human being, but rather is the personification of the Isle of Skye, Scotland. A place where I fell in love with the country, and proceeded to live for the next few years after arriving shortly after turning 18; it was a magical, incredibly moving place, in fact the whole country had this effect on me - as soon as I stepped foot there I felt immediately at home. I knew this place like an old friend, a long lost relative, a future lover. I intend to evoke this feeling in the observer - to have something so foreign but somehow so familiar, with Skye it is to observe her modern face and clothing, yet also seek behind this initial judgement and begin to see and feel something much older and full of wisdom hiding just beneath her skin.
To see The Isle of Skye is to have your soul for an instant remember everywhere it's travelled before this life. To see “Skye” is to gaze into the somehow distantly familiar eyes of someone you met once in a dream, and to easily fall into her with unwavering trust - without ever having spoken a word.
