An elegant addition to any home, with hints of mid-century modern forms combined with classic Chinese glazes, this family of handmade wheel-thrown minature vases are great for single flower arrangements or on their own.
Each piece is made with the finest New Zealand porcelain, which is reveared as one of the whites porcelains available. Using specialized tools that I have adapted for minature use, each form is carefully made with size, proportion, and balance in mind. Each piece is sanded for smoothness and fired in a kiln twice. After the first firing, glaze is meticulously applied in stages. The base glaze is a rich black glaze that is made in small batches in my studio. Due to the thinness of the walls, glazing is slow and after the first application each piece is allowed to dry for a day. The second glaze is applied slightly thinner. The two glazes are paired because of their respective properties. One thicker and more deals intense provides the base, the other more fluid when molten "breaks" across the surface of the other glaze allowing for what is called an "oil spot" effect. Oil spot glazes have a long history within Chinese Ceramics and were highly prized both in China and Japan. The two glazes in tandem provide surfaces that can not be replicated, each pattern created is specific to the piece. Each piece is fired in a gas kiln to a temperature of 2350 degrees F.
