A beautiful, old, hand made Batik from Pekalongan on the north coast of Java. Tulis is the Indonesian word used to describe a batik that is totally handmade by "kanting" (pouring) the wax onto the material. It is not made by stamp or by mechanically printing onto the material. This is the traditional and most labour intensive way of making a batik.
This batik is a PagiSoir (day night) batik that has two designs on the one piece of material, which meet in the middle on a diagonal line. This allows the owner to wear one design during the day and what appears to be a different batik at night. This practice was supposedly introduced during the war when the supply of cotton was limited. One half has a brown background with a multi-coloured floral and bird pattern, while the other half has a green background with multicoloured floral and peacock pattern. deals It is in very good condition on soft cotton.
A Kain is a piece of material about 2 or a bit more metres in length. This one is an unusually long batik, 105cm high by 208cm long.
A superb example of Indonesian batik.
