Whole calf tanned brown leather hide. This leather is what is used for airline pilot seats, I was told.
There is a tag with info - Edelman Royal Hide Sand RH20 DA11CRFL 53.75 and some other numbers - please see photos.
The hide is, at the longest points, 8"2" x 6'9". Looks like about 6' x 7 1/2' of a solid piece with no cut outs.
