Do Not Approach -- you see these signs all over Yellowstone National Park, with a lovely little caricature of a person being gored and tossed into the air by a buffalo. These beasties are impressive and MASSIVE, but they usually move slowly and seem much more interested in grazing than they do in you. So people get complacent. And every now and then, I've seen one suddenly spin and charge, snorting and belllowing from deep inside his resonant chest (it's an impressive sound!). Sometimes it's because of sheer lust, during mating season, and sometimes it's because a person has just irritated them to the point of action. Hence the signs. I was CLOSE to this big fella, and you can see he had his head turned to watch us (their eyes are way on the sides of their huge heads because, believe it or not, they're prey, rather than predator, and they need to be able to see a wide field of view). But, rest assured, I had NOT approached him. I was in one of the famous Yellowstone car jams that form when an enormous herd decides to cross the road, and all of the cars back up for days while everyone waits and gives the animals their due space. But this time, the herd wasn't crossing the road -- they were walking down the road. We were just cruising along, gazing out into the beautiful valley when we came upon the traffic jam and stopped, eagerly wondering what it was causing it. And then they came. These huge, 1000+ pound horned mammoths were right beside our car, and we had nowhere to go. So we just watched, held our breath a little, and tried not to draw their attention. I didn't even roll the window down to take photos until there was a break in the herd. When I got my chance, I zoomed in to this guy coming my way, snapped it quick, and rolled the window back up. Perhaps a false sense of security, because they could surely destroy my car if they wanted to, but that thin sheet of glass was the only thing separating us from him. One more thing to be thankful for -- windows! :)
