HISTORICAL DETAIL
Born Henrietta Kanengeiser in Vienna, Austria in 1889, she emigrated to the US when in her teens. After working at Macy's in the hat department she earned the nickname “Hattie” and she later renamed herself “Carnegie” after the richest American in the country.
She began designing jewellery in 1939 and began the Cocktail jewellery movement (1930s - 1960s) when pieces such as brooches, Demi parures and earrings put the finishing touches on outfits, much like today!
Assisted by her lead designer Kenneth Jay Lane until the 1960s her jewellery was popularised by Hollywood stars and New York socialites.
