This listing is for a beautiful vintage Victorian era crystal glass spruce or fir tree. This blown and shaped glass tree was most likely made in the late 19th century in France, by the Cristallerie de Clichy glass factory. The clear glass tree was made from a deals single solid cone of crystal and then the glass was snipped, swirled and pulled to form the branches of the four tiered, sloping fir tree. It can be used as a holiday decoration or as an everyday decoration or paperweight. The glass piece is hand signed "Clichy France" on the base. The pontil mark on the base where the glass was attached to the metal blowing apparatus has been ground smooth and polished. The piece is substantial and weighs 3 pounds and 7 ounces. It measures approximately 5-1/4 inches in diameter at its widest point and stands 10-1/2 inches tall. The tree is in excellent used vintage condition with respect to age and use. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs. It has some light surface marks in a few spots and some minor shelf wear scratches on the base. This is a lovely little piece of French art glass that would be a great Christmas gift or as a unique tabletop decoration for any room in your house.

Cristallerie de Clichy was originally founded by Louis-Joseph Maës in 1837 in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of Paris, and later moved to Clichy two years later. Clichy initially made inexpensive glass, mostly for export, but by 1844, they were being praised for their colored and overlaid crystal. Clichy was best known for its paperweights that were made from 1846 to 1859 and the company was probably the finest paperweight maker in the world during the classic period. In their relatively short history, they made some of the finest weights ever produced. Clichy later merged with the Cristallerie de Sevre in 1885. Unfortunately, no trace of the Clichy factory or its archives remain.
