Vintage Alfred Meakin, ceramic oval meat platter, vintage earthenware, antique pottery, wall plaque, 1945 pottery, Father's Day, Mother's Day,
Meat platter by Alfred Meakin featuring a hunting scene. Set up in 1875 in Tunstall, Staffordshire – the home of English pottery – Alfred Meakin's company stayed in the family until 1976 before being absorbed by the Churchill Group.
Alfred Meakin is not the only one featuring this hunting scene. Several other pottery companies carry the same pattern. Popular as this pattern was, an Alfred Meakin version is hard to find today. Fox hunters gallop over the oval, cream platter, resplendent in their riding pinks. (Although their frockcoats were really red, they became known as 'pinks' after the tailor Mr Pink). A pack of scent hounds busily sniff the ground seeking a fox's trail. The platter's rim is attractively scalloped with a double ridge. The Alfred Meakin England backstamp suggests it is post-war (after 1945) and also bears the letter 'A'.
The dish is in perfect condition – no chips, cracks or crazing. Serve your turkey on it at Christmas or Thanksgiving. Display on the wall to bring retro chic to your kitchen. Also a beautiful gift for a China Anniversary (20th year) or a nostalgic gift for an enthusiastic huntsman.
36cm long, 30cm wide and 4cm high.
