Pink smithsonite from the famous El Refugio Mine, at Choix deals, SInaloa, Mexico, a locality that is now depleted and closed. Specimens from this mine will become increasingly rare and valuable in coming years.

Much of the smithsonite from El Refugio is in the form of colorful, but thin crusts on rock. Occasionally the material is thick enough to cut spectacular, translucent cabochons. The smithsonite on this specimen is highly lustrous, botryoidal, and compact. The color of this specimen is also a rich and vibrant pink, as opposed to the grayish-pale pink color normally associated with the material.

The specimen measures 3-1/2 x 1-3/4 x 1" and weighs 148 grams.
