Deals Grandma Moses "Williamstown Toile" Unused Vintage Barkcloth, Rare Monochrome Warm Grey & Taupe Colorway | 24 inches wide by 25 inches high
This listing is for a 24-inch wide, 25-inch high piece of rare, unused vintage mid-century 1950s cotton barkcloth that is a reproduction of Grandma Moses painting "Williamstown," created in a warm grey toile. Details are:
~ The actual piece is shown in the photos. The monochrome colorway warm grey, taupe, and shades of brown. The fabric is unused New Old Stock, but it has been gently laundered to freshen it. I found no flaws or blemishes.
~ The top edge is serged (overcast). The left edge is a marked selvage, but it does not include the name of the painting. The other two edges are rotary cut.
~ Originally painted in shades of brown and green, the painting Williamstown was reproduced in several barkcloths, including one in full color and at least four toiles deals (grey, blue, green, and brown). While the full color version is fairly common and easy to find, the toile fabrics are very rare.
~ This particular toile evokes a lovely winter feeling on account of the many shades of warm grey, black, and brown. The black ranges from dark to light warm gray, and the brown ranges from a deep umber to a pretty taupe. The range of shades creates a monochrome effect that is both vintage and modern.
~ The fabric is medium weight, heavier than quilting cotton. It has a fine, pebbly fine herringbone-like texture often found in Grandma Moses barkcloth designs. I consider this fabric to be barkcloth, as do most vintage fabric collectors and as did Riverdale, which manufactured it. A few vintage fabric collectors consider the term "barkcloth" only to apply only to very thick, very nubby fabrics, and this is not that kind of fabric.
