The Romance of the Western Chamber is a well-known Chinese classical drama that tells the story of the scholar Zhang Gong (Jun Rui) and the daughter of the premier, Cui Yingying tried to break the feudal ethical codes to persue free love and marriage. The original story was from the Yingying's Biography by Yuan Zhen, based deals on which some folk oral literary artists collectively created the The Western Chamber Word of the Palaces by Dong Xieyuan in the Song Dynasty. In the Yuan Dynasty the dramatist Wang Shifu revised it and the drama script The Romance of the Western Chamber finally came into being. The drama had created several distinctive characters through intricate dramatic conflicts, and underlined the influential theme of "to sigh about true men and women in the world couldn't be confidants, to wish for all lovers to end up together".
Chen Hongshou (1598-1652) had created illustrations for three editions of The Romance of the Western Chamber in his lifetime, the most brilliant being the six black-and-white carved-line ones printed during the Empire Chongzhen years of the Ming Dynasty. These six pictures were extrmely narrative and vivid, fully reflecting his personal painting style. The original edition was drawn and carved by Xiang Nanzhou, whose skilled drawing and carving authentically preserved the style and traits of the original painting. It represented the highest standard of the Chinese woodblock illustration art of the 17th century. The original printer divided the picture into two frames to print it on across the left and right pages of a book. But we have joint the two pages together so as to regain the appearance of the original printing in the best way possible.
