Tagliamonte evokes the romance of the Victorian era with this outstanding black Venetian glass cameo. This is a high relief, dimensional cameo with substantial weight. Very special piece ~ a must for any collector. I would love to identify her, I am leaning strongly towards the Virgin Mary, or perhaps Juno wife of Jupiter.
Its inspiration comes from the Victorian Age era where Queen Victoria's love of cameos made them the fashion of the day. A prized souvenir for a Victorian woman was a cameo with her likeness by an Italian carver. While commissioned portraits were the vogue, another kind of portrait appeared with the anonymous woman. Cameo carvers could fashion such images quickly in shell or lava, and tourists created a demand for them.
**Some of these photos may show the image through the back, or at an angle which may distort the shape but shows a clearer depiction of the actual image. Like a natural stone, these pieces may have inclusions & markings within the glass itself.**

ABOUT TAGLIAMONTE CAMEOS & INTAGLIOS
Tagliamonte can be considered the only firm in the world that manufactures this kind of stone. Its exclusivity is not limited to the production in itself, but includes deals the masterful use of a "classical" iconographic repertory. Tagliamonte Venetian Cameos with their fascinating forms are a kind of seduction that belongs to another age.
Tagliamonte is bringing back a manufacturing style as old as Mesopotamia. Vitreous pastes moulded into cameos or intaglios, are a part of jewellery history that in recent years has been largely ignored. The style can be traced back as far as the Mesopotomians, but was further developed by craftsmen from the ancient Roman colony of Aquileia. Mr. Nino Tagliamonte, with two Venetian artists, dedicated five years of research to this project using authentic 18th century plaster matrix carvings. After numerous attempts, they rediscovered and successfully experimented with original Roman blending, processing and casting methods.
The company now has a collection of over three thousand matrices, partly original and partly modern castings, and can produce Venice Cameo gems identical to the antique originals by following the Roman manual processing patterns and formulas.
The cameos are available in a variety of colours, though each is hand wrought with incandescent glass and the exact colour is established only when cooled.
