➽ WHY I LOVE LETTERPRESS PRINTING
Letterpress prints give everyone a chance to own a genuine, original work of art at a reasonable cost AND they can also be a great conversation piece - a way of introducing others to this artform from the advent of printing, or you can share how your print came from a guy in rural Indiana who got laid off in 2020 and is trying to pull himself up by the bootstraps.
Letterpress printing is a historic, artisan craft using movable wood or metal letters, introduced to the Western world by Johannes Gutenberg c1450. This printing method used small, carved pieces of wood for each letter which are locked into a layout together, inked, and pressed onto paper and heralded the beginning of mass communication.
Contemporary letterpress printing is valued for its handmade and visually distinct, tactile qualities from the analog process. It requires careful attention throughout the setup and printing stages, but I love this slow, meditative design process - some prints take weeks to create from start to finish. But even so, I find joy in the ritual of making. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.
➽ ABOUT YOUR PRINT
Your poster will vary slightly from the example images in this listing. Indentions from the type (a valued hallmark of letterpress printing), slight differences in ink distribution, or other variations are charming evidence of the hand-printing process. Your print is not “perfectly” digitally printed but instead an artifact of a hand-made artisan craft.
This poster is printed on 12x18 inch heavyweight cardstock and will fit in a standard 12x18” frame. This acid free paper was chosen for its strength and durability, and has a slight tooth to the surface. Some papers are hand-cut or may include a deckled edge, which may be trimmed by yourself or your frame shop if so desired.
Your print will come rolled into a tube and I recommended that you flatten the print prior to framing and display. You may do this by gently and not too tightly rolling the paper in the opposite direction and placing it upon an even, clean, and flat surface with weights until it straightens. Do not expose paper or ink to deals water, liquids, or high humidity environments (like bathrooms). Because all pigments eventually fade, I recommended that you display the print outside of direct sunlight to extend the life of your print. Some mild tackiness or ink luster variation may exist on the surface of overlapped inked areas (which I kind of like!)
Please note that the print is UNFRAMED.
