Product code: T.C.W. and Company U.S. Civil War Era deals Anesthesia Administration Bottle
This is an amber drip bottle suitable for administering chloroform as an anesthetic during the U.S. Civil War. The bottle top contains an open tube allowing the chloroform to be administered by surgeons during battle surgical operations. Although sulfuric either was available before (circa 1846) the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War (1861-65), chloroform was the agent of use for surgical anesthesia by both Union and Confederate surgeons. Chloroform was preferred due to its fast action and it had been used during the Crimean War. Preference for chloroform was based on its being nonflammable, relatively odorless and ease of application via droplets over the open mouth or nose covered by cotton or other type of cloth. This amber bottle administration set protected chloroform from light. Need more photos? Please ask deals. Photos form part of the condition description. FREE Postage for the continental USA.
