Did you know sterling silver, argentium sterling silver, gold filled, and 14k gold can all tarnish? Each metal is an alloy (mixed with other metals for strength and durability). It's a common misconception that they don't. Good jewelry does require maintenance and care but will last a life time if treated properly. It's a good idea to regularly clean your jewelry to prevent hard to remove tarnish and bacteria.
How can I clean my jewelry? Please keep in mind these recommendations are specifically for Amy Bumgardner Jewelry pieces. Other artists may have their own recommendations. At least once per week, remove your jewelry and clean with warm water and a mild soap, unless your jewelry contains opals. I recommend regular blue Dawn dish soap. If the piece is grimy, an extra soft toothbrush may be used. Pro tip: place a wash cloth over the sink drain so you don't accidentally drop your jewelry down the drain. Another great idea is to use a bowl of warm water, away from the sink. Follow up with the Sunshine polishing cloth to bring back the shine, available in my shop.
What exactly is an alloy? An alloy is a mix of specially selected metals and is necessary to give your jewelry strength and durability.
-Sterling silver is composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper.
-Argentium sterling silver is composed of 93.5% pure silver, 5.5% copper, and 1% germanium
-Gold filled is a 14k gold layer pressure bonded to a brass core - it's much more durable than gold plated but does have a limited lifespan compared to 14k gold metals
-14k gold is composed of 58.3% pure gold with copper, silver, and zinc making up the remaining 41.7% - For reference, pure gold is referred to as 24k gold
