These fabric panels with intricate designs come from the Kuna tribe, located in Northwestern Colombia, along the border with Panama. The Kuna women hand stitch molas and attach them to the front and back of their blouses. They act as shields deals that protect from harm or evil. Each mola is unique and represents life as a colorful maze with different paths, and the beauty of nature.
Each mola takes from one to three weeks. First, the artisan stacks fabrics, all different colors. Then, she cuts a pattern, revealing just one of the underlayers. Next, it is hemmed and secured to the background cloth, by tiny stitches. She keeps cutting and stitching patterns to continue revealing more back layers of fabric. In short, the more layers a mola has, and the smaller the stiches, the greater its value.
