1910s deals Black Silk and Beaded Edwardian Handbag with Celluloid Frame, Fantastic Brocade Fabric Interior, Large
This is a lovely example of an edwardian handbag in great condition. The body of the bag is quite large at 8 inches (20cm) x 9 inches (23cm) (the handle adds another 6.5 inches/17cm) to the height). It is made from a black silk. It is beaded on both sides in a floral design. The pattern is different on each side. The beads are in a copper brown and silvery green. The floral pattern is quite stylised. This is sewn onto a celluloid frame which is made from a cream colour with a button you press as a clasp and faux tortoiseshell which is cut out in a scroll pattern. The handle is the same black silk and is attache with two celluloid rings.
The interior is lined in a wonderful bright lilac and gold brocade and there is a little pocket. It is edged with floral ribbon work where it attached to the frame.
It is beautifully made. For example, the body of the back is sewn into the frame with thread through little holes. The ribbon work inside hides this and on the outside, a single bead is added to the thread to disguise the holes and look decorative. As a sign of its great condition, these are all intact.
For its age, it is in terrific shape. The silk shows no marks or scuffs or signs of stress. The beading appears to be intact. The interior is intact but there is a mark, something liquid spilled perhaps, on one side of the interior that has turned into a brown age mark. It is quite deep inside so cannot really be seen at all unless you look for it. Certainly not from the outside. The handle is intact but does have a bit of wear just on the edges. The clasp still works and the frame is intact. This will fit your phone and a few other bits and pieces. I do council care though. This is over 100 years old. It has obviously been used lightly and stored well ever since. It should have plenty of life in it but it is antique. Be gentle with it, especially when opening and shutting. Do not put heavy things in it. Store carefully out of sunlight. It is a beautiful thing.
