Zuni jewelers are well known for their exacting lapidary work that celebrates the stones and shells in mosaic designs. Stone setting techniques include cluster work, needlepoint, channel and mosaic inlay. Silver was introduced in their deals jewelry style around the 1870's, after silversmith work was learned from Navajos. Turquoise, mother of pearl, spiny oyster shells, lapis, coral, onyx and man-made opal are some of the materials used in the outstanding Zuni jewelry. Zuni Pueblo is located in New Mexico near the Arizona border.
