French Antique Napoleon III Inkwell Travel Desk / Beautiful Piece with Brass Inlay & Original Blue Velvet Inner / Original Inkwells Inside

This is a beautiful travel writing desk in blackened wood (I don't know which type). It has inlaid brass detailing around the edges of the main part that folds out, and the smaller rectangular "lid" at the top. There is a brass medallion in the middle, with enamelling in a reddish colour.

This intricate inlaid work is called "Boulle" marquetry, named after (but not invented by) French cabinetmaker André Charles Boulle, (1642 - 1732).

When you open it up, the part that is used to write on still has its original blue inlay, with braiding around it. There is a small section with a lid for pens, and either side two cristal ink pots with engraved silver plated lids. There is another small section just before it, a little lower.

I acquired this from an auction in south west France,

It is a little time worn, to be expected from an item that is 170 or so years old. One has to wonder where this lovely writing desk travelled, who it belonged to. And one can imagine, the flourish of the pen, and what was written. The price of course, reflects this.

A marvellous piece of history. a lovely item to own, or to offer as a gift.

I use La Poste for small packets up to 2kg, and economy (but reliable) courier Mondial Relay or Happy Post for bulkier/heavier items. Everything is tracked for peace of mind.

Mondial Relay is used for domestic shipping for most items.
