The “Character” Toy Company thrived in postwar America. Located in Connecticut, the two partners developed an internal wire armature which allowed the toy to be posed in many different ways. Their claim was, “Quality, Design, Durability.” And in the baby boomer years, up until the company closed in the 1980's, this manufacturer sold thousands of well made toys. The bunny puppet on Captain Kangaroo and the tiger on Mr. Rogers, were both sourced through this company.
Made of deals a tan mohair, the face, ears and paws are a beige wool felt. The face has large brown glass eyes and the muzzle is needle sculpted. The line details like eyebrows, mouth and claws are painted on the felt while the upper face is airbrushed in a rust color for detail. Back and front of paws have an airbrushed brown spots as well. There is a tiny red felt hat with a colorful wool pompom on his head. The red is slightly faded. He is all original and in excellent shape. I surface cleaned him, but did not soak him. His tag reads, “Designed by Character” and “Made in USA.”
