Purple is my favorite color today. In this political climate, I found myself wanting more cooperation and less separation, so this "sculptured" gourd is my way of bringing the Red and Blue of Politics together into a color that represents cooperation and joining at critical places for all to be benefited. Purple is that blend, and this gourd is a wish for two separate pieces to come together to make a whole, sleek, mostly smooth and beautiful piece of gourd art.
This gourd is carved, burned, foiled, painted and beaded. Three abalone shells mark the front opening. Inside, it's coated with many layers of liquid acrylic over black paint. At the blossom end of the gourd inside is my signature leather disk, edge-beaded and crowned with another slice of abalone. Gold foil lines the rim, and amber beads edge the opening. Another shell hangs from the back of the blossom end on the outside, and includes a small pearl tucked into its ridge. Coated with wax for a soft deals satin sheen finish, the two gourd pieces were attached to provide the pedestal under the birdhouse gourd on top.
