Medusa is mentioned in Greek mythology as one of the three Mermaids. Of these three sisters, Medusa was the mortal. Her other name was Gorgo, which means wild look. According to one version, she was a beautiful priestess of Athena who was raped by Poseidon transformed into a horse, in the sanctuary of Athena. The goddess, outraged by the fact, could not break with Poseidon and so broke out on Medusa. He transformed her into a disgusting monster, which had snakes instead of hair. Her ugliness was such that whoever looked at her in deals the face was stoned.
Finally, Perseus killed her, with the help of Athena. Her head, the famous "Gorgoneio", was taken by the goddess from the hero and attacked her shield, because her head, even dead, stoned anyone who looked at it.
