Houghton/Hancock Michigan Canal In Fall Season
Sometimes referred to as Portage Lake Canal or just Portage Canal, this once small river was dredged to make it possible for freighters that would haul copper from the copper mines of the Keweenaw Peninsula, to Lake Superior and then to cities beyond.
Separating two of the Copper Country's larger cities, Houghton and Hancock, the canal joins the two by way of a lift bridge. Houghton being home to Michigan Technological University, and Hancock home to Suomi College attracts students that seek a great education as well as enjoying the natural beauty of the surrounding area, with it's untouched forest lands, rugged terrain and natural falls.
The view was taken from my parents living room window on the Houghton
side, overlooking the vibrant Fall hills of Hancock, as the Isle Royale Ranger III begins its journey with passengers heading to the island. Also in view is Mount Ripley, well known for some of the best snow skiing in Michigan. The original painting was done mainly in palette knife, truly depicts the beauty of deals Michigan's fall season.
