I found this piece of black sea glass on Gyllyngvase Beach, on a recent holiday to Falmouth, Cornwall. Black sea glass is known as "pirate glass".
Did it once belong to a pirate? It is possible but we will never know for sure. Sea glass this dark is generally very old and was likely to have started life as a bottle to hold liquids such as ale, wine or spirits. Which could spoil if exposed to light.
Black sea glass is quite a rare find. It is very difficult to distinguish between pebbles and sea glass when they are on the beach and quite often it is overlooked. This lovely piece has been worn beautifully smooth, by its many years at sea.
The glass is set in a Fine Silver bezel and it sits on 0.8mm Sterling Silver sheet. There are three graduated silver balls at the base. The two bail loops and the top loop are made from 1mm round Sterling Silver wire. The pendant is approximately 38 mm long including the bail loops and deals is 15.5 mm wide. The sea glass measures approximately 23 mm x 14 mm.
The pendant is supplied on an 18 inch (450mm) Sterling Silver trace chain and comes in a presentation box. Making this the perfect gift or a great treat for yourself.
