This lovely antique oil pastel painting features a serene scene of a sunset on Lake Elbert in Winter Haven, Florida.
Signed by the artist, Lucile Woodroof, on the lower left corner, the painting is titled "Lake Elbert" and is an original one of a kind piece of art, nicely displayed under glass in a solid wood frame measuring approximately 12" x 21".
Although not much is known about the artist, I was able to find two other paintings by her, both painted circa 1900 to 1910. I also found two agricultural books with drawings by Lucile Woodroof for the Georgia Experiment Station, dated 1921 and 1927. She moved to the West Coast in the 1930s, marrying William R. Bailey in 1941 before settling down in Santa Cruz, CA. Based on that timeline and the style of painting and frame, this painting most likely dates from circa 1910s to 1920s. The back of the painting is inscribed to a Mr. & Mrs. E.J. Yohahy.
It is in very good condition with some normal age toning on the reverse. There is also a large black splotch of oil pastel on the back which you may want to remove or tape over prior to hanging on a wall.
