Rare antique book 'Afterglow' by George Parsons Lathrop (1877) hardcover 1st edition, "No Name Series" Boston: Roberts Brothers, nice deals cover
The author of this book, George Parsons Lathrop, was born in Hawaii in 1851. He was educated in New York and then in Dresden, and became both an author and a poet. Later he lived in England, and was a newspaper editor. He married Nathaniel Hawthorne's daughter in 1871! They moved back to the U. S., and Lathrop worked for the Atlantic Monthly and later the Boston Courier. Note that Lathrop's name does not appear on the title page (though he was the acknowledged author). He founded the American Copyright League in 1883, and died in 1898. He and his wife lived in Concord, Massachusetts, and then in New York.
This book is "Afterglow" (1877) from the "No Name Series." It was published in Boston by deals Roberts Brothers, and has 316 numbered pages. It has a black cover and binding with red lettering and decorations (a horseshoe, four-leafed clovers, the publisher's initials, RB, etc.). Minor loss at top of spine. Binding is OK, with bumping to corners and minor foxing throughout. Copies in worse shape than mine are listed at over $150 on Bookfinder (when they can be found at all).
Nice advertising for other titles in the "No Name Series" on both the front- and endpapers. The book measures approx. 5" x 6 3/4" x 1. This really is a hard-to-find title, and would make a great addition to your book collection!
