Product code: Aztec Calendar deals Keychain — .930 Sterling+ Silver Accessory Rectangular Fob w/ Mexico’s Iconic National Symbol, the Cuauhxicalli Sun Stone

This vintage silver keychain is a souvenir of Mexico, where it was made. It consists of a latching-type keyring deals joined to a rectangular flat plaque fob by a short length of silver curb chain. The fob has decoratively clipped corners. Applied to the rectangle's center is an embossed rendition of Mexico's famous Aztec Calendar.

Materials: the entire keychain is made of .930 silver, which has a slightly higher silver content (930/1000) than Sterling silver, which is .925 (925/1000 silver content).

Size: the rectangular fob (including the attachment loop at the top) measures about 1-5/8 inches by 1 inch. The diameter of the circular portion of the keyring is about 15/16 inch. The overall length of the entire keychain is about 4 inches.

Marks: stamped on the back of the fob is “STERLING 930 MEXICO”. There is no maker's mark.

Age: the Mexican government “eagle” mark was used from about 1948 to 1980, followed by the “letter/number” mark used after 1980. In the absence of either kind of mark, this keychain is estimated to have been made in the 1990s.

Condition: this keychain is in good vintage condition, with some fine scratches, tiny dents, and some minimal dark oxidation speckling. This piece has not been polished. The fob and its embossed Aztec Calendar are in good condition, and the ring's latch mechanism is in good working order.

The Aztec Calendar
The famous Aztec Calendar Stone is an icon of Mexican culture. Also known as the Sun Stone or the Cuauhxicalli Eagle Gourd Bowl, a massive 12-foot diameter carved stone bowl used in human sacrifice ceremonies, was created sometime around 1500. As a result of the Spanish conquest of 1519, it was buried under Mexico City's central Zócalo where it lay for 300 or so years until it was rediscovered during construction in 1790. The stone was incorporated into a wall of the National Cathedral, and was displayed there until 1885, at which time it was taken to the Museo Nacional. When that museum's modern counterpart, the Museo Nacional de Antropología, was built in Chapultepec Park in 1964, the Aztec Calendar Stone was brought there, where it remains as the museum's central exhibit to the present day.
