The cave paintings of Altamira, Chauvet and Lascaux are believed to be over 16,000 to 30,000 years old. The paintings are stories handed down to us from our ancient ancestors. The Chauvet Cave was discovered in 1994 and is the oldest and is located in the Ardeche Georges in southeastern France. A Paleolithic sanctuary, the Lascaux Cave was discoveredin 1940 in the Dordogne Region of France. The Altamira Cave was discovered in northern Spain in 1879.

Altamira Cave was painted by Magdalenian people between 16,000-9,000BC. It mainly focuses on bison, deer, and wild boar. No humans. They painted with three colors in one animal, plus the accuracy of the physical proportions of the depicted animals show a significant advance in technical skill over most cave art.

The Lascaux Cave features the most prodigious collection of prehistoric art in Europe. First time plants were seen with a horse. The paintings were more polychromic. The colors were red, yellow, brown and black. Horses and ponies with fat bellies, small heads and hooves filled with color sponged on. Also aurochses, bison and reindeer are depicted in groups.

The Chauvet Cave is believed to be 30,000 years old. Engravings and paintings in blackand red ochre are prevalent. The animals were mammoths, lions, buffalo, bears, reindeer, aurochs, ibex, stags, and rhinoceroses, which were the most dominant. Even an owl was red dots painted singularly or in groups forming geometric figures and animal shapes. When I was on a horseback riding trip in France and was ableto go into the cave at Pech Merle in Lot. deals The painted horse with red dots was the most dominant animal.
