Set of seven Vintage French Hunting Scene Plates with Titles. These are a beautiful example of French transferware done by the Digoin Sarrenguemines factory. Each scene is a different drawing of a particular hunt with an inscription on the bottom in French describing the hunt. Included are: Battue aux Sangliers (beating the wild boars), Chasse au Serf (hunt of the deer), Chasse au Faisane (hunt of the pheasant), Le Piège a Loup (the trap of the wolf), Chasse au Lièvre au Chien Barret (barret dog hare hunt), Chasse aux Lapins (rabbit hunt) and finally “Biens des chasseurs se vantent du gibier qu'il ne tuent pas lui au contraire en tue beaucoup et ne s'en vante pas” (most hunters brag about the game they haven't killed, this hunter, on the contrary, has killed a lot and doesn't brag about it.) I love these plates because they are quintessential of life in the French countryside where hunting is very much a part of village life. You can hear the dogs chasing sangliers in the hills on hunting day mornings. I have personally come face to face with a sanglier being chased by two dogs. Luckily he was more afraid of me than I was of him. Wonderful addition to any hunting household. Perfect for serving cheese and wine after a long day on the hunt.
