Vintage Cast deals Iron Griddle Favorite Piqua Ware, Smile Logo, 1935, Favorite Stove & Range, Seasoned, Fine Condition
The Favorite Stove & Range foundry originally made stoves and a few pieces of cooking ware. The Favorite company focused its production on holloware after 1916 and continued to make kitchen ware until 1935. The foundry was quite large, build on 10 acres of land in Piqua, Ohio and at one time employed up to 600 people. Some say they contracted with the Ohio State Penitentiary to provide labor, but historical sources say the pieces made by the prisoners were unmarked.
This handsome griddle is marked at the top “Favorite Piqua Ware” with the smile logo under the words and the number “8” on the bottom. It is in fine condition, no pitting or warping. The griddle measures 9 ½ inches round with a 1” lip and 4 ½ inch handle. It is a sturdy piece, weighing 2 lb. 13 oz. The griddle is nicely seasoned and ready for cooking.
The Piqua cast iron pieces are much rarer than the well-known Wagner and Griswold because they were only produced for short period of time. Use your “smiley” skillet to make breakfast or hang it in your farmhouse kitchen as a remarkable collector's piece.
