Gladding, McBean & Co., began production of Franciscan dinnerware in 1934 at their plant in Glendale, California. Gladding, McBean & Co. formed in 1875 to produce sewer tile for the then expanding American West. Over the years they acquired several regional potteries and expanded their product lines several times to include roof tile, decorative art tiles, garden pottery, and art pottery. The Franciscan Desert Rose pattern was introduced in 1941. The last American Franciscan was made in 1984. After that production moved to England. Desert Rose is the most sold American dishware pattern of all times
This is a beautiful collection of Franciscan Desert Rose dishware at a bargain price. The pieces bear old Franciscan maker's marks from the 1940s. The platter has flea deals bites on the back of the handles. They are totally invisible from the front of the platter and we have glazed them to stabilize them for use/display. They in no way detract from the beauty of this piece. One dinner plate has an OLD flake chip on the front making it perfect for use on a plate wall or as a shelf piece. The other plate is in good vintage condition. We have priced this set to reflect the cost of one good vintage plate.
