1979 deals Bhutan Ten Chhertum Tibetan Snuff Bottle Pendant ~ Buddhist Identity Auspicious Symbolism ~ Dharmachakra & The Noble Eightfold Path

This charming, diminutive piece is filled not only with beauty,
but with symbolism and witty irony.

Fashioned from a ten chhertum, 1979 Kingdom of Bhutan coin,
it is a Tibetan snuff bottle pendant.

During the Qing Dynasty, Tibet was one one of the six regions
known to produce snuff bottles. The popular use of snuff began
to wane with the ending of the last Imperial period in China,
early in the 20th century. To this day, bottles have continued to be
produced, however, in different forms and notably as
popular pendants or adornment pieces. Tibetan style
bottles are quite unique and visually quite distinct from
Chinese forms.

The style of this bottle is popular and can be seen in later
pieces. What sets it apart from others is the use of the
Bhutanese ten chhertum, which at both obverse & reverse
sides is designed with Buddhist auspicious symbols.
Symbols which are still visible, include the conch shell
on the obverse side and the lotus, conch, the vase of
inexhaustible treasures, the glorious knot and victory
banner surrounding the central word for Bhutan in
Dzongkha language on the reverse side.

The lid of this boho snuff jewelry pendant forms
the hub of a stylized dharma wheel.
Representing the spokes of the wheel, are eight
small pieces of coral & deals turquoise stones......the
noble eightfold path of Buddhism.

This little pendant measures only about 1 inch or 2.5 cms
from top to bottom and/or side to side. It is about 0.5 inch
or 1.2 cms in its other dimension.

There is some oxidation present, seen in the above
pictures. Add a neck chain to this lovely and you will
have a delightful, conversation piece, not to mention
a lovely, little artifact, straight from the Tibetan plateau.
