Red Copper Luster Japanese water vase - This is a beautiful hand crafter (Never Slip Cast) piece that I produced - I created a design on the piece that flows in a Copper Matt foreground
This Raku Vase is finished in a Copper luster. Copper luster is always pulled from the Raku Kiln while the piece is at a high temperature, approximately 1850 degrees F, and then placed into a can with combustible materials. Naturally, the paper in the can will ignite and once the lid is closed, it creates an environment of smoke which causes chemical reduction. That reduction brings out the metallic effect yielding various metallic lusters, from copper color to reds, blues and other colors. Had the piece been left to cool a bit before being placed into the reduction chamber deals it would have yielded blueish green. If cool enough it would even have the crackled response on the piece.
