This unusual Jugendstil style piece dates to the late 1800s to early 1900s and is all metal, appearing to be pewter. Unmarked, when I tried to research it, the "ges gesch" hallmark kept coming up. That's short for Gesetzlich Geschutzt, a German hallmark.**

I think this is a letter holder or letter rack, to be honest, and since I have had it, that's what I've used it for. It's spring loaded, though there is no tension on it now, and it had a stainless metal piece screwed onto the bottom that I removed as it didn't seem to be original to the piece (it IS included, however).

It has gorgeous art nouveau lines and holes to attach it to a wall. It's heavy and solid and well made, and it has an old unpolished slightly dull patina like pewter.

I don't know how to rate the condition, so I will allow my photos to dictate that assessment. However, it is lovely, free from breaks or damage, and is ready for the next person to decide how they'd like to use it. I think it would be a lovely piece of wall art.
