Many people recognise African masks, as not just tribal cultural artifacts but as singular art forms with great lines, stories and graphic presence. Picasso, Modigliani, Brancusi and others certainly recognised this.
On offer here is a collectible hardwood mask with great patina.
It measures 9" x 6" / 23 x 15 cm (excluding goatee).
Expressive, square open mouth contains 8 real teeth, there is an affixed animal skin goatee, flaring forehead details and integrated ears that are part of the carving and not inserted later.
In very good condition for its age. There is no evidence of insect or water damage, no scratches or missing elements.
There is one vertical crack that is hard to see in the photos that runs from the left side of the bottom lip to the bottom of the mask. In no way does this crack threaten the structural integrity of the mask.
Another thing that may be hard to see in the photos, is the fact that there is some white pigment around the chin on the front and more (covering at least half of the mask) on the back side. See photo # 5.
Under a bright light this pigment/powder sparkles, leading my father (who was the previous owner of this mask), to suggest it was 'special' and possibly used in a ritual of some sort.
The literature on African masks suggests that white pigments were often applied as an 'anti witchcraft' detail' so who knows?
As to the tribal origin of this mask I am not sure either. People I have shown it to suggest Idimu, Lega, Dan or Baule. I will go so far as to guess it came from the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) but nothing further. If you know more, please convo me as I love learning more about the items on offer in my shop.
All in all, an interesting African mask, that displays very well and comes with its very own history and stories to tell.
The Fine Print:
***I'm a woman who loves to travel and have spent a ‘longish' and lucky lifetime exploring many parts of the world. Most of the items I list have at one time been used, worn and/or displayed in my home.
My aim is to be scrupulously accurate in the description of the articles I sell. Take the time to look closely at the photos. I regard them as key when ascertaining condition. Many of my items are older and, with age comes wrinkles (trust me I know!). Many times, not always, it's the flaws that give an item its charm and character.
