deals This pair of lovely porcelain plates by wildlife artist Larry Toschik offers up a pair of raptors both large and small--a Great Horned Owl, and a Screech Owl in their natural habitats. Toschik, who died in 2012, was noted for his lifelike depictions of wild animals in their native surroundings, and birds in flight.
The Great Horned Owl here, one of Toschik's "Prowlers of the Night" series of paintings, features the Owl perched among bare-branched trees in a forest setting, with a rustic cabin in the background, his mottled feathers blending with the forest hues. The Great Horned Owl, which is also known as the "Tiger Owl" and "Hoot Owl," is a large raptor native to North America and is the iconic Owl most often featured in storybooks. Their long, ear-like tufts make for a signature silhouette, and they are fierce predators, able to take down other raptors such as Peregrine Falcons and even other owls.
The Screech Owl is a short, stocky bird, about the size of a Robin. It also has ear tufts, though not as comparatively large as the Great Horned Owl. It likes to nest in tree cavities. This particular Owl perches atop a stand of yellow wildflowers, and Toschik's portrait includes a pair of dainty Ruby Throated Hummingbirds at work on the flowers.
Each plate measures 10 1/2 inches in diameter, and they are in excellent shape. A nice accent for a rustic cabin or a library, or as a gift for the owl fancier in your orbit!
