The undulating surface, simple foot, and irregular glaze on the outer surface of this antique stoneware mold give the impression of rustic folk art. But the interior with its delicately fluted sides and central motif of a voluptuous cluster of grapes belies the honest, unadorned exterior. The leaves of the grapes are deeply carved out to create a more baroque feel. The cut end of the grape vine is depicted with a stylized wood grain that has the effect of a paisley. The tips of the flutes are concave, which would have created a scalloped, almost lacy effect around the top edge of the molded dish. The white salt glaze lends a touch of natural artistry to the mold, the glaze covers the piece in an uneven wash, revealing hints of the natural clay underneath.
This ornate mold is a testament to the Victorian penchant for complex and elaborately decorated dishes. This deals type of mold would have been used to create an extravagant savory or sweet jelled dish, the savory versions often including pieces of meat, seafood, or eggs, though this probably was used for fruit jellies or creams considering the grape decoration. These creations would have been the centerpiece of the meal. Perhaps a fancy Victorian aspic is not to your taste, but these evocative molds can still add grace and warmth to the modern kitchen.
