deals Wonderful old baking bowl probably from Western Pottery. In 1906 7 midwest potteries joined together to form Western Pottery producing a wide-range of everyday stoneware. Because so many companies were involved, old molds were continued to be used and not marked.
The clay on this piece is a dense yellowish common of Ohio river potteries. In excellent condition...I think this must have sat in a cabinet for many years, unused. (unusual)
A baking bowl was a real workhorse in the kitchen, perfect for serving two foods, one in the lid another in the bowl and baking anything from a chicken to a pandowdy!
Marked USA in a block and 9.in. indicating the size. Unglazed rims on the lid and bowl, and a stave pattern on the side. Not very many of these-complete floating around.
Excellent example of a well fitting lidded bowl, only major flaw a 'flake' (Pic.4) in the glaze from manufacturing, all other tiny flaws are from manufacturing. No use chips, cracks or scrapes. example of a baking bowl---complete (Pic.4)
