Meet Elmer the original "Grass Head" planter! Before there was ever a Chia Pet, there was Elmer, the perfect depiction of the World War II G.I. He looks like the illustrations and cartoons that appeared in Yank Magazine, read by all the troops. Elmer's smile and uniform cap at a jaunty angle make him representative of so many of those servicemen. Made of unglazed deals pottery and measuring 7” tall on a 3 1/2 “ by 3” base, he is just a great sculptural piece. He can also hold a plant and--as originally intended--grass seed can be sprinkled into the grooves on his head and watered from within, then trimmed into a “haircut.” Elmer is in great vintage condition with no chips or cracks, though he has some smudges on his face, as if he was wrapped in newspaper at some point. A good eraser might remove these.
Hard to find, and easy to love, we think he would be perfect as he is, grass-free, just sitting on a book case, reminding us of the humor, courage, and patriotism of the Greatest Generation.
