Tlaloc Offering Bowl
The center of the incense burner has the image of Tlaloc. Tlaloc in the Mexica culture has been an important representation and essence of rain, the element necessary for life on this planet. In pre-hispanic times and even now deals, ceremonies are held to honor Tlaloc. Tlaloc is sometimes referred as "rain god". In the Mexica culture, there were no "gods". There were representations of elements and natural forces. There are variations of Tlaloc depending on the era some of when these ritual objects were made. In ancient times, vessels were filled with offerings for rain as well as placing Tlaloc images and representations in different places. Crops and life in general depended on rain.
This bowl with the images of Tlaloc as those seen in various other original pieces of art, is made with heat resistant clay. This clay is obtained in the state of Mexico. Many artifacts made of clay were made with the same type of clay, including incense burners. This bowl can be used for offerings and has been sealed to retain water.
