Orthoceras are extinct sea creatures whose modern day ancestors are the nautilus, octopus and squid. They were squid like animals with hard shells and lived over 400 million years ago; that's long before the dinosaurs! They lived in the deepest parts of the ancient oceans and were predatory hunters of the Paleozoic seas. When they died their shells fell to the floor, where they were covered in sediment. Here they fossilized within the black limestone that is found in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, the only place these deals fossils are found.
