To start i select a piece of oak that suits the design i have in mind. Then i carve out the design into the wood before filling with epoxy resin.

I try to find beautiful pieces of wood for the pictures, with interesting grain or a selection of knots and burrs, that fit with the design i have in mind. However, the more beautiful knots and burrs the more difficult it is to carve out and the more interesting the shape and grain of the wood the more difficult it is to get the carving square and true. Hopefully i got the balance about right with this piece.

The next step is to fill the recess with epoxy resin (a deals food safe polymer) mixed with various colours and then let harden for a good number of days.

Sanding and oiling complete the process.

All my pictures and resin pours are one off and original items. I guarantee i will never make another that is the same as your unique piece.

For pieces where i have kept the wood as natural as possible so this will mean the odd bit of bark may come off as the wood ages or there may be a hidden recess somewhere that occasionally dribbles out grains of dust. When it comes to hanging the pictures they all come with a hole in the back to aid hanging if required but it is up to you to decide how best and safely to hang your piece.

Epoxy resin has good chemical resistance and strength and low absorption of moisture. They also offer particularly excellent resistance to corrosion (solvents, alkalis and some acids). It is food safe and as i oil all the boards with natural oils you may chose to use your picture as a chopping board or dinner plate.
