I spotted this guy at an estate sale recently and couldn't resist! There is just something about a man in uniform....and of course McCoy pottery!

This is a 1940s McCoy Seamen's Bank for Savings. The ceramic bank was designed by Frank Goss as a way to promote the Seaman's Bank and Savings. The piece was produced by McCoy. There is a SBS Seaman's copyright mark between his legs on the back side.

These came in two versions, basically. The most common one had a cork base with a plain metal trap at the bottom and the paint between his legs was blue. But this version was made with a felt base , the metal trap is marked, and the paint between his legs is gray. I have seen a few of the blue paint version, but only one other gray paint version.

There are no chips, repairs, or paint loss. Even the stripes on his arm are a vibrant red. There is some overall crazing, however - see photos. A previous owner has placed cloth tape on the bottom, I have not attempted to remove it.

This would be a great purchase for anyone who collects McCoy, vintage banks, advertising memorabilia or militaria!
