Size: 6” x 5" x 3.25” (15.5cm x 12.5cm x 8cm)
Each aspect of the design reflects the nature and energy of The Norns (Nornir).
The Norns first appear in the Poetic Edda. They are commonly equated with The Fates, but are much more significant than simply being the forces that control personal destiny.
They are three in number and are echoed in appearance and function, though are also given different names in different Edda poems.
Urth is the first. Her deals name means ‘Origin'
Verdandi is the second. Her name means ‘Becoming'.
Skuld is the third. Her name means ‘Debt' or ‘Blame'.
At the stage of creation where Time and Space come into existence, the Norns manifest and organise the nature of existence and all the entities there. They live beside, own or possess, the Well of Origin from which everything emerges. They are the manifestation of cause and effect, and the understanding that arises of how to change and manifest new possibilities. They are intimately connected to the World Tree and the runes. They were thr first beings to use the runes, which they carved into the World Tree - thereby setting up the patterns and processes of the universe.
The triple spiral, representing the three Norns as the three generative forces of the universe.
There is a square, symbol of material time and space, and of the hall beneath the Tree where they dwell.
There is a design of three Eolx staves, representing the three goddess/giantess Norns, woven together with the ‘pattern of nine', an ancient design within which all the runes can be found ( and thus also representing thr World Tree). The unified design symbolises the complete integration between the Tree, the Worlds, the Norns and the runes.
There is a row of the Elder Futhark runes around the rim allowing this piece to be used as a rune oracle, but primarily this piece is designed to take the observer deeper into the mysteries of the structures of Reality.
The rune texts around the sides are Old Norse that can be found in the 'Voluspa':
URTH HETU EINA,
ATHRA VERTHANDI
SKARU A SKITHI.
SKULD INA THRITHJU.
Beginning, the first is called,
the second is About to Happen.
They carved into the wood.
Debt was the third.
On there lower side and on the base, the designs can be used for intuitive rune assessments, using the numerical system of aett: rune location.
