The moment I saw this remarkable vessel, part of me regretted the decision to only collect American pottery pitchers. It's hard to pinpoint precisely what makes this pitcher (or vase) so captivating, but its seamless uniting of incongruent forms would be my guess: the body that nearly forms an orb, a channeled spout whose channel carries over to a waterfall handle, a narrow, short neck that restricts pouring--no combination of those attributes would suggest gracefulness, yet that's what they achieve.

With its raised, stylized flowers on both sides, this 7-inch-tall Hakusan pitcher from Japan of the 1980s is in like-new condition, with no chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines, scratches, scuffs, color loss, or repair.
