agate is mined in Botswana Africa. Influx of Botswana agate to the US has come
to a trickle because of export laws in Africa. These fine agates have been in
high demand for ten years. To promote jobs in Africa rough rock is not allowed to

Most agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas where they represent cavities in the molten mass which were then filled, wholly or partially, by siliceous matter deposited in regular layers upon the walls. Such agates, when cut transversely, can exhibit a succession of parallel lines, known as fortification bands, giving a banded appearance. Such stones are known as banded agate.

In the formation of an ordinary agate, the waters containing silica in solution percolate through the rock and deposit a siliceous coating on the interior of the cavities. Variations in the composition of the solution or in the conditions of deposit may cause corresponding variation in the successive layers, so that bands of chalcedony often alternate with layers of crystalline quartz.

The color of agates can vary significantly, depending on the distribution of minerals within each band. Minerals that impact agate color include: iron oxides (red, brown, black, green), manganese (pink, violet, black), chromium (green, yellow, red), titanium (blue), cobalt (red), nickel (green), and copper (red, blue, and green). The variety of color is further modified when these minerals work in combination. The color can occur through an agate band, or it can form as small, dot-like inclusions.
