Product code: Soviet Russian Medal for the deals WW2 Defense of Moscow Variation 1 in SUPERB CONDITION incl. ORIGINAL 2-piece Suspension Red Army Military Award

SOVIET WW2 Medal for the Defense of Moscow, Variation 1.

This is GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL Soviet era medal made at the Soviet Mint in the early to mid-1940s and officially issued by the Soviet Government – not a replica, post-war reissue or souvenir!

The medallion is in brass and measures 32.3 mm in width. It is Variation 1 characterized by a separate eyelet soldered to the main body of the medal. This version was made only during the 40s.

The medal is in SUPERB CONDITION, especially for the early version of the award! It shows practically no wear, only some miniscule contact marks that are practically unnoticeable to the naked eye. The raised details are perfect and exceptionally crisp. The original “gilt finish” (mint luster) is clearly visible in recessed areas on both sides. The medal is completely free of any blemishes or oxidation spots.

The medal comes on original WW2 suspension device, a two-layer early version in steel with self-locking pin. The immaculately clean, perfectly preserved ribbon is old, although not as old as the medal itself (Soviet war veterans often wore their medals with pride, and the ribbons got frequently replaced when they got tattered or soiled.) To summarize, this beautiful example of Defense of Moscow Modal is about as close to mint condition as they come for a WW2 award.

This medal was awarded to one of the participants of perhaps the most critical battle of the initial period of the Patriotic War. By the time the Germans arrived at the doorsteps of Moscow, they had already overwhelmed massive Soviet deals troop formations in Belorussia, encircled and cut to pieces a large army group at Kiev, besieged Sevastopol, and completely blockaded Leningrad. Even though the Soviet government and most of the industries had evacuated from the Soviet capital, the loss of Moscow could have been catastrophic to the Soviet war effort: Moscow was the nexus of the entire Soviet railroad system, not to mention that its surrender would be a huge blow to morale of the already staggering Soviet population.

It helped of course that the German Wehrmacht had been bled white in the previous battles and that Moscow's air defenses were next to none in the world. Moreover, the Soviets had prepared formidable armored reserves comprised to a large extent from the troops taken from the far eastern border (after it had been determined that Japan was not planning to attack the Soviet Union in 1941). Additionally, the unusually cold winter of 1941-42 - even by Russian standards - wreaked havoc on German equipment.

The Soviet counteroffensive at Moscow in early December 1941 - January 42 failed to destroy the Army Group Center, but it inflicted serious losses on the Germans and pushed the front line away from the city. Even more importantly, this was the first major German reversal on the ground in WW2 and thus a tremendous morale boost for the entire anti-Nazi coalition.

The Medal for the Defense of Moscow Variation 1is really a “must have” in any WW2 medal collection. Don't miss out on this beautiful ORIGINAL example!
