Here we get to what the weights mean. One of today's earrings weighs 0.23 oz, 6.68 grams. Less than a quarter of an ounce. A good weight for most women, but it is lightweight for most ears.
Judith Ripka, award winning designer, feels that 4 grams per earring is a good weight to stay under. Some say a total of 10 grams for "art" earrings is reasonable, others stay to 7 grams per pair - max. So, it looks like maybe a design limit of 3.5 grams per earring is reasonable (give or take your choice - wire/post/style and science).

Another major factor to consider besides the weight is wire diameter (thickness) commonly referred to as the gauge of the wire. It refers to a larger piercing hole which in turn CAN deals easily support a much heavier ornament without damage. A thicker wire will support more weight before causing irreversible ear lobe damage. This option allows a designer to offer a much larger (in both meanings of the term) selection.
